18 Jan Gin crawl, anyone? Chauffeur-driven tour of Manchester’s best gin bars to launch in the new year
Gin crawl, anyone? Manchester has no shortage of places to indulge in a little mother’s ruin – and now fans of the juniper stuff can take a chauffeur-driven jaunt around some of the city’s best bars on a new guided tour launching in the new year.
Already wildly popular in London, The Gin Journey is being brought up north by former Manchester bartender Leon Dalloway, who worked at the likes of Socio Rehab, Trof and the Whiskey Jar before moving to the Big Smoke.
“It’s basically a posh bar crawl that’s educational and fun as well,” he said.
“I want to educate people about the world of gin, liquor and cocktails but I also want to show them a good time.”
Guests will be ferried between five bars, including Gorilla, Home Sweet Home, Cottonopolis and Cane and Grain’s First Floor Bar, to sample a different type of gin and gin cocktail at each one.
They’ll also get to learn about the spirit’s rich and chequered history, with prizes to be won along the way.
“I wanted to bring the experience to some new cities with a great history of gin, and Manchester was at the top of the list,” said Leon.
“It’s quite closely linked with the Bridgewater Canal, where the botanicals would arrive to flavour the gin, and you’ve also got one of the oldest gin distilleries, Greenall’s, not far away in Warrington.”
The first Manchester Gin Journey will be held on Wednesday, February 3, from 6.30pm, and the tours will continue every week after that.
Tickets cost £45 and are available to buy now from shakerattleandstir.co.uk .
If the tours prove popular enough, a weekly Saturday afternoon session may also be launched.
We’ve certainly got a thirst for the spirit here, with the third Manchester Gin Festival returning to Victoria Baths in March.
The 2016 event will be held from Friday, March 25, to Sunday, March 27, showcasing more than 100 different gins in the spectacular surroundings of the Grade II*-listed former swimming pool.
